DIA to Selma: The March

Friday, October 7th, our Middle Schoolers (grades 5th-7th) headed to Selma, Alabama to march across the Edmund Pettus bridge in honor of those who fought for the civil rights of African Americans. DIA took 14 buses with over 400 students, staff members, parents, and special guests from Riverdale, GA to several cities in Alabama and back with the escort of the Riverdale Police.



Along the way, the students stopped at Tuskegee University and received amazing hospitality and souvenirs. Once they arrived in Selma, they were grandly greeted by all of the lovely citizens of Selma and members of city hall. Mayor James Perkins of Selma gave an inspiring speech and walked with the students along with some profound individuals who either witnessed and or was involved in the "Bloody Sunday" and past marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. After DIA "made their mark", they headed to Alabama State University to reflect and have lunch.



DIA's Executive Director, Craig Cason, wants to thank all who were a part of and supported this historical moment such as the Riverdale Police Department, Selma Police Department, Light of Joy Church, Tuskegee University, Alabama State, our scholars, the families of our scholars, and staff. We look forward to our next historical event!
